VIOLA

Regimen

1) Scales

  • pick 2 major & minor scales jot down on a list so you don't repeat them the following week.

  • Make sure that you get to each scale over time.

Homework

1) Record yourself playing a scale! Write down the finger numbers of a major scale and indicate in between shifts whole vs half steps.

2) On the solo only work the notes with the rhythm with a metronome. Do not pick up the bow until you are confident in the notes.

3) I encourage you to do small chunks at a time then string the sections together to create a cohesive song

Technique

     a) Sirens - Play and work the D & A Strings THEN

         without playing G & C tuck elbow!!!!

     b) Determine, based on tempo, how quickly to land the plane

     c) "Land the plane" don't crash

        1) Support the upper arm to keep control of the pressure

     d) Keep the bow on the string and "pulling through bow" long bows!

     e) When placing your fingers down COMMIT IMMEDIATELY -

ESPECIALLY through vibrato! Remember when you play soft that

doesn't mean you let go of the pressure on the vibrato in the left hand!

    f) Bow location on strings.  Controlling the pressure depending where it's at.

        1) Soft Fast Tempos (extremes) - slurs without any notes  love the finger board

        2) Soft Slow Tempos (extremes) - slurs with a ton of notes - love the bridge

        3) Lout Fast Tempos (extremes) - sort of middle/bridge

        4) Loud Slow Tempos (extremes) - REALLY love the bridge
